Read Numbers 21
1. What did God send when the people began to speak against Him and Moses again?
2. What does the LORD tell Moses to do when he goes to God to ask him to take the serpents away?
3. What does John 3:14-21 teach you about the connection between this story in Numbers and the death of Jesus?
4. Copy John 12:32. Meditate on this. What did Jesus mean when he said those words?
5. What happens in Numbers 21:21-35? What peoples are defeated?
6. What does Leviticus 18:25-26, 28 say about the people in the land God was giving Israel? Leviticus 20:22-24?

Read Psalm 118:26. The Songs of Ascent, which were sung during the Ascent up to Jerusalem for the feasts which occurred 3 times per year, consist of Psalms 113 to 118, which were definitely sung during Passover season as the pilgrims came up over the Mount of Olives and back down toward the city of Jerusalem. Once they crested the top of the Mount of Olives, they would have seen the splendor of the Temple before them. The songs would have been on everyone’s mind. “Hosanna!” means “O Save!”
- What does Deuteronomy 16:16 say about the requirement of the people to come to the temple in Jerusalem?
- Copy the following portions of Hallel Psalms to give you an idea of what the people would have been singing and thinking about as they entered Jerusalem at this time of year.
Psalm 113:2
Psalm 113:4-6
Psalm 115:9
Psalm 116:1-2
Psalm 116:12-14
Psalm 117
Psalm 118:19-21

As we come out of the celebration of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, let us consider some of the hymns written about these events and what they mean for us.
In this hymn by the great hymn writer Charles Wesley–he was believed to have written over 6500 hymns–Wesley points out some of the incredible truths of the Resurrection. I love the line, “I woke–the dungeon flamed with light! My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.”
- And can it be that I should gain
An int’rest in the Savior’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain—
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?- Refrain:
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
- Refrain:
- ’Tis myst’ry all: th’ Immortal dies:
Who can explore His strange design?
In vain the firstborn seraph tries
To sound the depths of love divine.
’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore,
Let angel minds inquire no more. - He left His Father’s throne above—
So free, so infinite His grace—
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam’s helpless race:
’Tis mercy all, immense and free,
For, O my God, it found out me! - Long my imprisoned spirit lay,
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quick’ning ray—
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee. - No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in Him, is mine;
Alive in Him, my living Head,
And clothed in righteousness divine,
Bold I approach th’ eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.
Charles Wesley (1707-1788)

When tribulation strikes, when unspeakable atrocities stare us in the face, are we going to be like the disciples, hiding in a room, leaving town, forgetting what He said, what He has promised us?
Or will we remember that He said:
“I will never leave or forsake you.”
“I have plans for you, to give you a future and a hope.”
“I have given you all things that pertain to life and godliness.”
“I am the bread of life.”
“I am the way, the truth, the life.”
“I am the shepherd. My sheep hear my voice.”
“I collect your tears in a bottle.”
“You are the apple of my eye.”
“Nothing can separate you from the love of Christ.”
“If I be lifted up, I draw all men to me.”
“I am the vine, you are the branches.”
“I am the light of the world.”
“I have loved you with an everlasting love.”
“I will replace your heart of stone with a heart of flesh.”
“I have left you a comforter who will teach you all things.”
“I am coming back.”
He is risen . . . just one more promise kept. Behold, He will keep them all in due time. His justice is not swift . . . He would that none would perish. But justice will come. His promises are true. Hallelujah! What a Savior!

The glorious thing about the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus the Christ is that it continues to speak in our hearts. Even today, modern hymn writers are still penning lyrics of the glory of the resurrection and our hope in Christ alone.
My favorite part of this song is “There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain; Then bursting forth in glorious day, up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory, Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me.” When I sing it, I am reminded of the glory of God and His great power over death.
CHORUS:
In Christ alone my hope is found;
He is my light, my strength, my song;
This cornerstone, this solid ground,
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My comforter, my all in all—
Here in the love of Christ I stand.
In Christ alone, Who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save.
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied;
For ev’ry sin on Him was laid—
Here in the death of Christ I live.
There in the ground His body lay,
Light of the world by darkness slain;
Then bursting forth in glorious day,
Up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory,
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me;
For I am His and He is mine—
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.
No guilt in life, no fear in death—
This is the pow’r of Christ in me;
From life’s first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny.
No pow’r of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand;
Till He returns or calls me home—
Here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand.

Throughout the history of the Jews, many prophets of God spoke of the coming Messiah, the Promised One. The following is not intended to be an exhaustive list but rather a representation of some of the Old Testament Prophecies that were fulfilled in the life and suffering of Jesus Christ:
Psalm 2:7-9
“I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.”
Psalm 110:1-2, 4
The LORD said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” The LORD shall send the rod of Your strength out of Zion. Rule in the midst of Your enemies! . . . The LORD has sworn And will not relent, “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.”
Psalm 69:20-21
Reproach has broken my heart, And I am full of heaviness; I looked for someone to take pity, but there was none; And for comforters, but I found none. They also gave me gall for my food, And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
Isaiah 50:5-7
The Lord GOD has opened My ear; And I was not rebellious, Nor did I turn away. I gave My back to those who struck Me, And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting. For the Lord GOD will help Me; Therefore I will not be disgraced; Therefore I have set My face like a flint, And I know that I will not be ashamed.
Isaiah 53:1-10
Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him. He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken. And they made His grave with the wicked-But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth.
Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand.
The incarnation of Yeshua (Jesus the Christ) was something God had planned for from the foundation of time, that we would be in Christ and Christ in us. That Christ (Messiah) would, through his humanity, bring us into his relationship with the Father by the power of the Spirit. That is the beauty of the life, passion and resurrection of Jesus. May God bless you during this season as you seek to understand the unfathomable goodness of a God who would become man to save those who were totally uninterested not to mention unworthy of salvation. Great is God and worthy of all praise!

I like the imagery of this hymn by Jeannette Threlfall. It conjures up the Palm Sunday Road in Jerusalem that meanders down the Mount of Olives to the Garden of Gethsemane. It’s a great place to imagine the events this hymn celebrates, namely the crowd shouting “Hosanna in the Highest!” to Jesus as made his triumphal entry into Jerusalem on the foal of a donkey.
Hosanna, loud hosanna
the little children sang;
through pillared court and temple
the lovely anthem rang.
To Jesus, who had blessed them,
close folded to his breast,
the children sang their praises,
the simplest and the best.
From Olivet they followed
mid an exultant crowd,
the victory palm branch waving,
and chanting clear and loud.
The Lord of earth and heaven
rode on in lowly state,
nor scorned that little children
should on his bidding wait.
“Hosanna in the highest!”
That ancient song we sing,
for Christ is our Redeemer,
the Lord of heaven, our King.
O may we ever praise him
with heart and life and voice,
and in his blissful presence
eternally rejoice.
Jeannette Threlfall (1821-1880)
