When I first started practicing law, my mentor told me to write everything down after speaking to a client or another attorney. I nodded and smiled to myself knowing that I didn’t need to write every little thing down. I had a great memory!

A few years down the pike and some years of practice under my belt . . . and the birth of my child – and well, getting older, I started to see what he meant about writing things down.

Today, I write everything down – even so, I forget.

My relationship with God is no exception to this memory loss issue. I need to remember to remember God.

Sometimes, I can be in the midst of my trouble or trial, and I forget that I have a God who loves me–who is near to me–who will never leave or forsake me. I find myself acting as if I am in this trouble alone.

When I finally remember, I feel foolish. How could I forget about God?

My solution? I try to keep God always on my mind.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 says to pray without ceasing. In other words, keep a constant connection to God through prayer.

Remember to remember God. It will make a difference in how you handle life’s challenges.

The Tabernacle was a moveable “tent of meeting” that God commanded Moses to build and for which God provided very detailed instructions as to the building, the furnishing, the use, the transportation and the location.

Facts about the Tabernacle:
□ There are 50 chapters in the Bible that discuss the Tabernacle
□ It would have fit in half of a football field
□ God dwelt with his people for 400 years in the Tabernacle (the Exodus to the time of King Solomon)
□ The Tabernacle was in the center of the Israelite camp

Read Exodus Chapter 25
1. What/who was the source of the items used to make the Tabernacle? See also Exodus 12:35-36.

2. With what heart did God ask them to give their offering?

3. What do these verses tell us about giving to the LORD?
□ 2 Corinthians 9:7

□ Luke 6:38

4. Copy Exodus 25:8 here. What is the purpose of the Tabernacle? What does this tell you about the heart of God?

5. How did they know how to build the Tabernacle?

6. According to Hebrews 8:1-5, it was important that Moses followed the instructions for the building of the Tabernacle exactly because it was a shadow of what?

7. What do you learn about the Ark of the Testimony from Exodus 25:10-22; Exodus 37:1-9? If you are able, draw a rough sketch of what it looked like on the back of this page.

8. What will go into the Ark according to verse 16 and 21?

9. Other things were later put into the Ark as well. What were they according to Hebrews 9:4?

10. Each of the items in the Ark were designed to remind the people of an event or action that God took on their behalf. For each of the following, give the event or action they were to remember:
□ Manna (See Exodus 16)

□ Aaron’s rod (See Numbers 17)

□ Tablets of the Law (Exodus 20)

Note: The Ark of the Covenant was to be made form Acacia wood. Acacia wood was durable and resistant to disease and insects, making it the most suitable material for constructing the ark. In addition, the Ark did not have any idols or likenesses of God. Review Exodus 20:4-5. The Israelites were to worship their God without idols or images in contrast to the pagans around them whose gods were often a combination of exaggerated animal and human features.

11. Describe and/or draw a picture of the Mercy seat based on what you read.

Note: The Mercy Seat represented the place where the High Priest would “atone for” or “cover over” the sins of the people. This was the place of the sacrificial payment for sin. Jesus, our High Priest eliminated the need for the sacrifices under the law by becoming the propitiation (atoning sacrifice) for our sins on Calvary. The Mercy Seat was where law (10 Commandments) and mercy (blood covering sin) meet.

12. Describe and/or draw the Table described in Exodus 25:23-30.

13. What goes on the table? What does this represent?

14. What do the following verses tell you about bread?
□ John 6:31-35

□ Matthew 4:4

Your Word

I read Your Word
a love letter
the sweet aroma of my Beloved
speaking of Your love for me
Your plans for me
Your desires for my good
the sure hope of our future together

soft pillowy clouds of promise
billow
flutter
settle
in a luscious feather bed
inviting me
embracing me
enveloping me
buoying me
securing me
I lay my head on a soft pillow of Your promises
I press my face to meet its coolness
wisps of lavender are released

I find rest

LOVE

Love

When I was young, I learned of love
I knew it as a feeling, an overwhelming rush
a flush, a warmth that spread over me
until it ebbed
it always ebbed

When I was older, I learned of love
I knew it as a decision
I knew it as a choice
a rugged mountain to be climbed
a rough sea to be navigated
a treacherous road covered in black ice
until it left
until he left
then love was just an empty hole
then love just hurt

when I had loved and lost
when all I had I poured out to the last
when my efforts came to nought
when I was empty and alone
my heart pulled out
left to wither
as I withered
as I let go of my dead love
as I learned to leave my dead love

I learned of another love
the Lover of my soul
He’d made it possible for me to love
gave me feelings of love
taught me to choose love
girded me to climb the mountain
emboldened me to navigate the sea
held me to the treacherous road
loved me

and in the loving
I saw
love is not merely a feeling
to be loved is to know security,
to be loved is to exude beauty
to be loved is to know love in return

and in the loving
I saw
love is not merely a choice
to love is to never quit
to love is to never leave
to love is to always hope
to love is to sacrifice
unto death
my death
my beloved’s

but the death of my beloved’s love
was the doorway to a greater love
The Lover of my Soul stood
beckoning me
speaking words of love to me

as I responded
as I walked across the threshold
I fell into the ocean
His thoughts for me
His plans for me

His love is as He is
unending
unselfish
unfailing
unfathomable
under me like wings
His love lifted me
out of my puddle of tears
to the heights of His glory

I and He forever
My Savior
My King
My Friend
My Lord
My love

I shall
as He did
give my life
to prove my love

O, sweet Jesus, baby boy
Your gentle hand will guide
Generations to the promised land
Sinners justified

By Your birth you testified
The Father’s faithfulness
By Your death upon the cross
You taught obedience

O, sweet Jesus, meek and mild
In rugged manger born
You chose the humblest entry point
not even one was scorned

Shepherds, the most lowly
You revealed Your birth to them
Wise men from afar off
Believed and worshiped then

Twas not to high and lofty ones
With knowledge, power, prestige
But to the humble, foreign men
From waiting a reprieve.

From Bethlehem to Golgatha
Wasn’t far to walk
But every step the Father’s will
You would never balk

O, sweet Jesus, born to die
So sweet your baby hands
But later they would pierce them thru And kill the precious lamb

I know the end
All is not lost
Like Jonah and the fish
Three days passed, You rose again
having paid the cost

O, sweet Jesus, hear my prayer
You died for me I know
But now I want to live for You
And make my heart Your throne

O, sweet Jesus, Lord of all
King o’er every King
Come quickly for your church to take
Your praises we will sing

But ‘til you come I pray to be
A light upon a hill
your name I want to lift up high
Bring glory, do your will

Baby Jesus, small and soft
born that star-filled night
for ages prophets had foretold
Light to pierce the night

Your heavenly home You left behind
put eternal things aside
to enter human time and space
a temporary home.

why would You,
Almighty King
Lord of all the Lords
come down to earth to be with us
so far below Your throne

the cross it is the centerpiece
instrument of pain
see where blood was flowing down
the lamb on it was slain

O Jesus, help me see the truth
Your life was not in vain
Your coming was to meet my need
Yours a blood sacrifice

the living, it was needful
without blemish You were found
yet dying was the pinnacle
my sin stain it removed

in dying You gave your life for me
propitiatory substitute
in rising You opened eternity
rendered the accuser mute

a baby born to humble means
lain in a manger bare
is only part the story told
look further if you dare

the only true and living God
the one they call “I AM”
He kept His promise in the child
He sent His Son, the Lamb

It was love, mere love; it was free love that brought the Lord Jesus Christ into our world. What, shall we not remember the birth of our Jesus? Shall we yearly celebrate the birth of our temporal king, and shall that of the King of Kings be quite forgotten? Shall that only, which ought to be had chiefly in remembrance, be quite forgotten? God forbid!

No, my dear brethren, let us celebrate and keep this festival of our church with joy in our hearts: let the birth of a Redeemer, which redeemed us from sin, from wrath, from death, from hell, be always remembered; may this Savior’s love never be forgotten! But may we sing forth all his love and glory as long as life shall last here, and through an endless eternity in the world above! May we chant forth the wonders of redeeming love and the riches of free grace, amidst angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, without intermission, forever and ever!

And as, my brethren, the time for keeping this festival is approaching, let us consider our duty in the true observation thereof, of the right way for the glory of God, and the good of immortal souls, to celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ; an event which ought to be had in eternal remembrance.
