Baby Jesus, small and soft
born that star-filled night
for ages prophets had foretold
Light to pierce the night

Your heavenly home You left behind
eternal things put aside
to enter human time and space
the Father as your guide.

Why would You,
Almighty King
Lord of all the Lords
come down to earth to be with us
the outcasts and the poor

O Jesus, help me see the truth
Your life was not in vain
Your coming was to meet my need
Yours a blood sacrifice

For the living, it was needful
without blemish You were found
yet dying was the pinnacle
my sin stain it removed

The cross it is the centerpiece
instrument of pain
see where blood was flowing down
the lamb on it was slain

In dying You gave your life for me
propitiatory substitute
in rising You opened eternity
the accuser rendered mute

A baby born to humble means
lain in a manger bare
is only part the story told
look further if you dare

the only true and living God
the one they call “I AM”
He kept His promise in the child
He sent His Son, the Lamb

May God bless you this Christmas with a vision of Easter.

Jesus Saves!

As part of the Christian walk, life with God as a child adopted into His kingdom, and a bond servant to Christ, I am called to walk by faith, not by sight. If I could see t he road ahead, my destination, the culmination of God’s plan, I would not be walking by faith, but rather by sight.

But God has not left me without road signs, reminders. He has given me His Word, songs, hymns, creeds and personal testimonies, such are the billboards which placard my journey with God. One such billboard message comes to mind as I sit with God today. JESUS SAVES! This two-word saying, which some might call “a tired cliche” or “meaningless Christianese” has multiple messages of encouragement for me.

If “Jesus saves,” it follows that Jesus is a Savior. He must, therefore, have all the job qualifications a Savior should have. He must have much more power than the powers from which I need saving. As a Savior, He must have more authority than the authorities that hold me or threaten me. As a Savior, He must have superior wisdom and understanding than that which I possess to see the way through trouble or out of trouble or know when to wait for trouble to flee. He must have power over death–my most heinous foe. In short, a Savior must be a God among gods, able to save me from other gods and idols as well as men and demons. He must be the One true and almighty God, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen–LORD of lords. And so He is, my King, Jesus. He alone is my Savior.

“Jesus saves” also speaks of His willingness to save. This is good news because it means I can offer to those needing saving, asking for salvation–the willing one, Jesus. He saves because He is in the business of saving. It is His offer to me, to us. For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that we might be saved.
“Jesus saves” necessarily implies a need to be saved. If the need wasn’t real, why would it even be important to say or billboard, “Jesus saves?” But it is necessary. It is urgently necessary to be saved, for it is appointed a man once to die and then the judgment. Jesus saves me from that–Judgment–the wrath of a holy God against a sinful humanity.

“Jesus saves” is also a reminder to me that I am no one’s savior. Jesus saves–not me. He alone has the words of eternal life. His blood alone atones for my sun. His sacrifice alone satisfies the requirements of the law, provides the price of redemption. For by grace I have been saved through faith and that not of myself–it is the gift of God. There is no other name given under heaven by which we may be saved.

“Jesus saves” gives hope. I may be lost or a dear friend or loved one may be lost, but Jesus saves. He will seek out the lost. He sought me out. He chased after me when I had nothing of worth to offer and had spent His inheritance in ungodly living, treading His commands underfoot like so much straw and dirt. But “Jesus saves” brings me hope. I look to Jesus author and finisher of faith in me and in others. If a good work was done in someone’s life, no matter how early or what has transpired since, Jesus will save. He will finish the work that He has begun. I can hope, have a certain expectation of good, in that.
Don’t disregard those road signs, those placards in your life. God is near. Look up. Your redemption is near.

Jesus is my Valentine

cross-of-hearts

JESUS IS MY VALENTINE

Jesus is my Valentine.
The lover of my soul.
He gave the perfect gift of love.
His life laid down for mine.

He’s written His words of love,
Laid out His plan to save
Pages bound with scarlet thread
A message in His blood.

He did not only pay for me;
He paid the world to save.
Each broken heart made well again
To eternal life, the key.

I’m betrothed to Him, His bride to be.
He’s coming back and soon;
My bridegroom longs to be with me,
So He’ll not tarry long.

Jesus is the righteous judge,
Wicked souls will meet their doom.
But as for me, I’m washed in blood,
His robe of white I donned.

Is Jesus your Valentine?
Does His blood your sins blot out?
There’s only one whose love can save,
One special Valentine.

I awake to Thee

Today I awake to Thee, Sweet Jesus
today I awake to Thee

My thoughts scurry to the work
I bid them quiet be

I take the water of the Word
and wash myself in it

And then with pen and journal
I in Your presence sit

I find my joy as I wait on You
and hear Your voice again

Who Pays?

He should pay for what he’s done

Jesus paid it all.

I want to exact a price
He hurt me
He stole from me
He betrayed me
He broke my heart

Jesus paid it all.

I want him to pay
Pay for what he did
Pay for what he didn’t do
Pay for what he said
Pay for what he didn’t say

Jesus paid it all.

He’s getting away
He’s not being accountable
He’s not doing his part
He’s not stopping
He’s not sorry

But…

Jesus paid it all.

Oh, praise the One who paid my debt and raised this life up from the dead!

Who is He?
The world has struggled with this issue since Jesus came on the scene more than 2000 years ago. Was Jesus simply a man? Was he a great prophet or teacher? Or was He the Christ–the Messiah–the Promised One, fulfilling hundreds of prophecies of the Old Testament prophets?

1. What does Isaiah 7:14 foretell about Jesus (the Messiah-the Promised One)?

2. What does Isaiah 9:6-7 tell us about the Messiah?

3. What additional information is given regarding the Messiah in Isaiah 11:1?

4. What do you learn from Isaiah 53:1-3

5. When did Isaiah live and give his prophecies?

6. What does the prophet Micah tell us about the birth place of Messiah in Micah 5:2?

7. When did the prophet Micah live and give his prophecies?

8. What does the prophet Zechariah tell us about the Promised One in Zechariah 9:9?

9. When did the prophet Zechariah live and give his prophecies?

10. When read these prophecies, given hundreds of years before the person they describe was born, by three different men, and you learn that they came true in the person of Jesus, what does that make you think about the Bible? God?

Closer to the birth of Jesus, months before, we are given additional information about Jesus.
Read Luke 1
11. What has Mary been chosen to do? Why?

12. What prophetic information is given about the child in this chapter? Provide a verse reference.

13. What happens when Mary goes to visit Elizabeth? What prophetic information does Elizabeth speak about the child Mary is carrying?

After Jesus was born, people were still speaking about His future and who He was.
Read Luke 2:8-15
14. What was spoken about the Messiah to the shepherds? Who delivered the message?

Read John 1
15. What do you learn about Jesus from this chapter? On what did John base his knowledge about Jesus?

Hosanna

palm sundayHosanna, loud hosanna,
The little children sang;
Through pillared court and temple
The lovely anthem rang.
To Jesus, who had blessed them,
Close folded to His breast,
The children sang their praises,
The simplest and the best.

From Olivet they followed
Mid an exultant crowd,
The victor palm branch waving
And chanting clear and loud.
The Lord of earth and heaven
Rode on in lowly state
Nor scorned that little children
Should on His bidding wait.

“Hosanna in the highest!”
That ancient song we sing,
For Christ is our Redeemer,
The Lord of heav’n our King.
Oh, may we ever praise Him
With heart and life and voice
And in His blissful presence
Eternally rejoice!

It’s easy to get Jesus wrong.  You could consider Him just a wise teacher, gentle prophet, or worse, a mere man. You could limit Him in your thinking to the 33 years of his life and try to hold His influence to those narrow boundaries.

But Jesus won’t stay in the small enclosure you built for Him. No, He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords, the great I Am, the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, He is the coming King and Messiah (the promised one) whose arrival is foretold by the Old Testament prophets.

Understanding the implications of Easter, requires an understanding of exactly who Jesus of Nazareth was and is. According to the gospel of John, He was in the beginning with God, co-equal to God, part of the trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit).

So what was God doing living as a man in a remote village outside of Jerusalem in the first century A.D.?

God became man to solve man’s problem, because man was eternally separated from God by his sin, and the only way to change man’s future, so he could be in communion with God, was for a man to live a perfect life, fulfilling all the requirements of God’s law, and to then give up that perfect life in sacrificial offering for the sins of all the other men who lived and would live. That is what Jesus did for me, for you, for the whole world.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”  John 3:16

He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.  1 John 2:2

Who’s coming?

The coming of Christ should not have been a surprise to the people of God.  Multiple prophecies foretold of the coming of Messiah.

The following are just a few of the things that were known:

  • He would be born of a virgin and He would be known as “God among us” (Immanuel).  Isaiah 7:14
  • He would be a child, a Son of God.  Isaiah 9:6
  • He would be a descendant of David (son of Jesse).  Isaiah 11:1
  • He would be born in Bethlehem.  Micah 5:2

Interestingly, all of these prophecies, given over 500 years before His birth, were fulfilled in the birth of Jesus.  All of the promises of God are true.  He is faithful to keep His promises.  He is not slack concerning His promises, but in the fullness of time, they will be revealed.
