The Sabbath

Many might hear the term “Sabbath” and think the concept is not relevant to a non-Jew in 2016. This would be faulty thinking, arising from a lack of biblical literacy. In fact, the Sabbath and the biblical teaching about the Sabbath is as relevant today as it was when it was given.

Read Genesis 2:1-3

1. What did God do on the 7th day of creation? Why do you think God set aside a day of rest for His people?

2. Copy Exodus 20:8 below. What does it tell you about the Sabbath in the eyes of God?

3. What purpose does God give for the Sabbath in Exodus 31:13-17?

4. What does God say about the Sabbaths in Ezekiel 20:12?

5. What did Jesus say about the Sabbath in Mark 2:27-28?

6. What does it means when God says the Sabbath was a sign between Him and the people of Israel?

7. What does it mean when God says He “blessed and sanctified” the Sabbath?

8. How can you apply these teachings on the Sabbath to your own life?

The Old Testament is divided into five sections, namely The Law, The History, The Wisdom and Poetry, The Major Prophets and The Minor Prophets.

The New Testament is divided into five sections, namely, the Gospels, the History of the early Church (the Book of Acts), the Pauline Epistles, the General Epistles and Prophecy (the Book of Revelation).

Knowing more about the Bible makes the Bible just a little bit easier to understand and study. This series of posts is designed to make the Bible smaller and more manageable for you to study day by day, line upon line and precept upon precept. (Isaiah 28:10)

There is a reason Genesis is called the book of beginnings.  We are now in the 4th chapter of Genesis and still finding firsts.

verse 1 – First record of intercourse (“Adam knew Eve”)

verse 1 – First record of conception

verse 4 – First record of God respecting an offering

verse 5 – First record of God not respecting an offering (first time we find “unacceptable” worship)

verse 8 – First recorded murder/fratricide

verse 16 – First time someone is described as going “out from the presence of the LORD.”

verse 17 – First record of a city being built

verse 19 – First recorded incidence of bigamy

verse 21 – First record of music/musical instruments

verse 21 – First record of craftsmen working in bronze and iron.

If Jesus truly had the words of eternal life as Peter said  in John 6:68, why wouldn’t everyone who heard His words accept the message of the gospel?

The answer is found in John 3, right after the well-known proclamation of God’s love for man in John 3:16, we read this:

And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. John 3:19-20

Is your love for your sin keeping you from accepting the free gift of salvation?  Are you clinging to the darkness, hiding from the light, so you can continue to engage in your sin?

Don’t be deceived, Light is coming.  He will expose you for who you are and your evil deeds will be known by all.  Repent and turn from your sin and allow the Light of the World to flood the darkness of your soul.  Today is the day of Salvation!

It is not surprising that a book entitled “Genesis” , which means origins or beginnings, has within it, many important “firsts.” For example, in verse 3 we have the origin of light. In verse  5, we have the first morning and the first day. In verse 6, we have the first atmosphere (firmament). In verse 9, we have the first appearance of dry land. In verse 10, we have the first seas. In verse 11, we have the first grass, the first herb that yields seed, and the first fruit trees. In verse 14, we have the origin of the stars and seasons. In verse 16, we have the origin of the sun and the moon.  In verse 20, we have the first sea creatures and the first birds. In verse 22, we have the first blessing recorded. In verse 24, we have the first land creatures. In verse 27, we have the origin of man.

Those are all I saw.  Be sure to leave a comment and let me know if I missed any.
